Greetings, and welcome to St. Mary's Prekindergarten class! My
name is Julia ("Miss Julia") Ekhlassi. I have been teaching
at St. Mary's for 11 years. We have a lovely
classroom filled with activities for young children. I look
forward to a great year ahead!
Lynn Helms("Mrs. Helms") is our Pre-K assistant. She has
been a teacher for both 3- and 4-year-olds here at St. Mary's.
Together, we make a great team!
Each morning, we follow the Open Court
pre-reading curriculum. It is filled with a variety of lively and
age appropriate activities that will familiarize the children with
alphabet letters and their sounds, different types of literature, parts
of a book, vocabulary words, and high-frequency words. As the
children learn through these activities throughout the school year, a foundation is
laid for future reading. By the end of our school year, the
children will have the tools they will need to succeed in kindergarten.
Since the Open Court curriculum is used school wide,
transitioning into kindergarten will be the next step in learning to
read.
We also use the Harcourt math
program, examining a different math area each month, Weekly Reader
activities that involve math, social studies, and science, and a variety
of activities found online using the Smart Board in our
classroom.
The religion curriculum used in our classroom is
Sadlier's Discovering God's World. We also provide
character education using Peace Making Skills and
Bullyproofing in Early Childhood.
