Dear Fourth Grade Parents,

This is the curriculum for your child's first quarter of the fourth grade.
Many of these skills are ongoing and we will work on them throughout the year.

In our Religion classes, the children will learn how they can be participating members of the church and how to choose ways to live their Catholic faith. They know they can accomplish this by living the law of love. Students will learn the meaning of and memorize the Beatitudes.

In Reading, they will learn new vocabulary words, create webs to activate prior knowledge, predict outcomes, retell plots, and accurately answer comprehension questions. The Reading Renaissance program will be utilized fully.

The children will learn to read and understand place value to the hundred millions in Math . Students will continue to learn the value of large monetary sums and to make change. Use of large numbers in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division while solving word problems will be discovered. They will practice new measuring techniques and create multiple graphs.

In English, Writing and Spelling classes, the children will use strategies to apply proper spelling techniques and use correct legible letter formations while using a ballpoint pen. They will utilize the writing process of pre-writing, drafting, revising, proofreading, editing and publishing while using correct paragraph structure in their work. Fourth graders will be able to identify subjects, predicates, nouns and verbs within the four types of sentences.

Social Studies classes will find the children understanding different parts of maps, realizing where the United States is in relation to other parts of the world, and discovering the regions of the U.S. in a broad sense while studying the southwestern region states specifically.

In Science class, the children will learn the wonders of plant formations and structures. Fourth graders will become familiar with our ecosystems and will see how plants and animals interact within these systems. Various classroom experiments will continue to help reinforce the scientific process. We will begin to explore matter towards the end of the quarter.
