Dear Fourth Grade Parents,

This is the curriculum for your child’s first quarter of the fourth grade. Many of these skills are ongoing and we will work on them throughout the year.

In our Religion classes, the children will learn how they can be participating members of the church and how to choose ways to live their Catholic faith. They know they can accomplish this by living the law of love. Students will learn the meaning of and memorize the Beatitudes.

In Reading, they will learn new vocabulary words, create webs to activate prior knowledge, predict outcomes, retell plots, and accurately answer comprehension questions. The Reading Renaissance program will be utilized fully.

The children will learn to read and understand place value through the hundred thousands.  We will work on recalling multiplication facts and developing fluency with multiplication.  Problem solving and higher level thinking skills will be used to provide students with a deeper understanding. Simple Solutions will be used to keep concepts current and we will take weekly quizzes.

In English, Writing and Spelling classes, the children will use strategies to apply proper spelling techniques and use correct legible letter formations while using a ballpoint pen. They will utilize the writing process of pre-writing, drafting, revising, proofreading, editing and publishing while using correct paragraph structure in their work. Fourth graders will be able to identify subjects, predicates, nouns and verbs within the four types of sentences.

Social Studies classes will find the children understanding different parts of maps, and beginning our study of Florida History.  Native American Tribes and Exploration and Settlement of Florida will be our main topics.

In Science class, the children will learn about the Properties of Matter, Changes in Matter and Forms of Energy.  The Discovery Zone and in-class experiments and demonstrations will be used to really make science come alive!
