In all of my classes a major goal is student safety. P.E. classes are activity based, and with that comes the risk of injury. Therefore I stress to the students to be careful as they participate. The PE curriculum for grades 6-8 will consist of mainly team sports and some individual sports. We play a particular sport for five or six class periods. This is what I call a "unit". I will run all the units the same in that we begin with teaching and/or practicing the skills necessary to play that particular sport or game. Then the rest of the unit is spent on playing the actual sport or game. I expect the students in my classes to then try and properly perform these skills while engaged in game play. Grades 6-8 will spend some class periods learning basic Health information. Examples of Health lessons include: Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Basic Muscle Identification, and Strength Training. We will be using the Technology Center for some PE classes. A Health research paper or perhaps a Health research power point presentation will be the goal. Examples of Health topics include: Diabetes, Cholesterol, and Cancer to name a few. Students in grades 6-8 are required to be prepared for class by being dressed out in a PE uniform as stated in the St. Mary's student handbook. Students are required to dress out and report to class in a timely manner. Students are also required to fully participate in all class activities. This is the major portion of how students are graded. Class preparation and participation. The standard school grading scale will apply.
